4 days in Lisbon gives us plenty of time to get to know this city and we’re impressed. There’s plenty to see in the 7 hills and port area that make up Lisbon and after a quiet dinner on Friday I’ve finally recovered enough to really head out on Saturday night. It’s our last night out with Grant and Maria and after a pretty average meal (unfortunately the food in Portugal, with the exception of the impeccable Portuguese tarts, has been underwhelming) we decide to find a few bars. The alleyways of the restaurant district are heaving and we find a small bar where Grant orders 4 mojitos. The bar tender uses no less than ¾ of a bottle of rum in our 4 drinks and after finally finishing these off we walk back into the street only to discover we are also in the heart of the Lisbon gay district. The seething masses of young, and old, men are enjoying the Lisbon cocktails and we head through the crowd to another bar for a “Safari and soda” .... long story.
We also manage to fit in a visit to the museum of modern art in the ..... district that despite being free is definitely over-priced. We also drive out to .... see a 9th century castle before dropping Grant and Maria at the airport. We’ve had a great couple of weeks travelling with them and can’t wait to see them again when we go sailing in Turkey : )
We spend Monday in Lisbon exploring the city, the castle overlooking the main town, the shops and searching for good food (apart from the tarts). At last we discover the best restaurant in Portugal. It’s a little Indian place where the owner swears I’m an English movie star (although he’s not sure who) .... flattery will get you everywhere.
