We leave Tuscany late on Monday afternoon after waiting in vain for the power cord to our laptop to arrive in the mail from France. A few hours later after a very scenic drive through the Tuscan and Umbrian countryside we arrive in Gubbio. This small medieval town is simply stunning, even in the light drizzle of dusk. Driving through the old city gates and up through high walled lanes we discover our hotel is right beside the main square which has commanding views over the valley below. We head out for the requisite pizza of the day and find a hidden restaurant in the walls of the old town filled with locals.
On Tuesday morning we decide to tackle the hill overlooking the town and our labours are rewarded with amazing views of the town and surrounding mountains and valleys. We also discover that today is a public holiday and the local villages are all converging on Gubbio to celebrate the local patron saints day for the kids. Families are out and about everywhere and all the roads are closed to traffic. All the kids are wearing white pants, red cravats and either blue, yellow or black shirts, depending on the saint they are supporting in the races around the town. There is a great atmosphere and most people just spend the day wandering around the town bumping into friends and family.
The local delicacy of the area is truffles. Dinner tonight consisted of one of the best pasta dishes either of us have ever tasted, hand-made tagliatelle with shaved truffles. Truly amazing!
