I spent my birthday in 3 Mexican cities – An early flight from Oaxaca, with a slight hangover from last night’s dinner and drinks, and we land in Mexico City. Owing to the fact we only have a few hours here, we jump on one of those dodgy looking open-top double-decker tourist busses that blight most major world cities. The only problem, apart from the obvious looking like a stupid gringo tourist, is that it is cold (only 12 degrees when we arrived) so we get off after a couple of hours acquainting ourselves with the outside of many of the city’s sights. Mexico City definitely looks like it was worth giving more than just a few hours with interesting neighbourhoods, countless museums, ancient Aztec ruins and some very distinctive architecture. We lunch on slow roasted baby goat and corona and jump into a Lucha Libre (Mexican wresting where the wrestlers wear masks) fan store to pick up some t-shirts. Mexico City doesn’t live up to its dangerous tag in the slightest and we end up catching the metro system to and from the airport .... that is until it catches fire and we’re forced to flag a taxi on the street. Beggars can’t be choosers when there are hundreds of people coming out of the metro station and we’ve got a flight to catch! The taxi turns out to be a 1970’s VW beetle with no passenger seat and no meter .... the type our guide book warns us against catching as many people get robbed in them.
Fortunately, we make our flight and after arriving in Merida we meet Ron and Rosemary (Sav’s folks) at the Hacienda. It begins to pour with rain (coincidently?) but clears up enough for us to catch a couple of motorcycle tuk tuks out to the local restaurant – the only problem is unlike tuk tuks all over the world, the passengers in our contraptions are in the front with nothing to protect us from accidents or sudden stops!
