And so life is Puerto Escondido with only minimal variations to our routine each day ...... and it is so good! At the end of the week our surfing and Spanish are not significantly improved but this has been exactly what we wanted to do for a long time.
We’ve also managed to meet a few people along the way (some of whom we’ll meet again next week in Oaxaca for the day of the dead) and our second afternoon turns in to it of a party around the hotel pool .... hard not to when a bottle of Tanqueray gin cost $7.50 and the beers are less than a dollar each.
Puerto Escondido is a fishing town with magnificent beaches made famous for surfers due to the existence of the legendary “Mexican Pipeline”. I surf there only one day when it is “small” (every other day I’m at the much more tranquil point break of La Punta) and it is an exhausting 2 hours of paddling to avoid winding up “under the pipe”.
We travel everywhere by taxi as it is hot, humid, very cheap (about $2 a ride) and not very safe for gringos to walk along the beach at night. But the locals are laid back and friendly and our hotel is very comfortable with a broad view across the town and beaches. Other guests include a couple of monkeys and a quite a large crocodile that we’re assured is only let into the hotel pool when there are no guests staying. A week does not seem nearly long enough.
