

















I’m convinced that it’s a prerequisite to have “suicidal tendancies” before being deemed a bus driver in Mexico. It’s a 6 hour bus trip from Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca as we fly down the mountain side in neutral and minimal breaking... And although the bus is full, we still manage to pick up more locals along the way who stand for the rest of the windy trip with their mass of bags. It’s an effort not to be sick as we’re thrown around the bus!
Oaxaca is considered to be one of the poorest areas of Mexico but also one of the most culturally and gastronomically rich. It’s colonial buildings gives it a very quaint feel. We’ve decided to visit this beautiful city for “The Day of the Dead” which is a large celebration which welcomes back the beloved dead to the earth for a day! It involves visiting the cemetery, getting dressed up in garish outfits, eating lots of special food such as Mole (stew with chocolate sauce) and partying with loads of Tequila! The costumes are amazing!
Whilst we’re in Oaxaca we also visit some of the oldest Mayan ruins at Mount Alban. What makes this site unique are the carvings which some say provide evidence of Viking, Chinese, Jewish and African presence in Mexico prior to the Spanish invasion.
Our last night in Oaxaca is spent at a local bar with Mark & Malf, two poms that we’ve befriended, to celebrate our time together and Richard’s impending birthday with a couple of shots of Metzcal whilst listening to Vincent Fernandez (an infamous Mexican musican that looks disarmingly like Sean Connery). After saying goodbye we make our way to a gourmet dinner which includes dishes such as cactus with cricket sauce and lobster with Mole! Certainly one of the most unique meals we’ve ever had!
